In 2002 PML became an independent company limited by guarantee (clg) with charitable status; company number 4178503; charity registration number 1091222.
PML is governed in accordance with charity law by a Board of Trustees, who are also Directors under company law.
Our commitment to excellence extends to our governance arrangements by adopting best practice from the charity sector and from the corporate sector where appropriate.
Our current Board membership reflects the need to have both strong scientific as well as business representation.

Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent KCB CBE MA
Having been a former Commander-in-Chief Fleet of the Royal Navy, I have a strong connection with the sea. I have been a Trustee of PML since 2008 and became Chair from 31 October 2015. Through Orchard Leadership I provide strategic advice to organizations in the public and private sectors. I also served as the High Sheriff of Devon until March 2016.
Baroness Watkins of Tavistock
I have recently joined PML as a Trustee, having brought with me considerable experience of working at Board level in the public, the not-for-profit social enterprise and charitable sectors.
My background is in the health sector, where I have first-hand experience of research including applying for research grants and publishing in relevant journals. I also have extensive experience in higher education, including with Plymouth University, where I served as Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Chair of the University of Plymouth Enterprises Ltd until 2012.
Nigel Godefroy FCA
I am a Trustee of PML, and Chair of the Audit & Finance Committee, bringing to the Board financial expertise as a Chartered Accountant. I have strong connections to the City of Plymouth and to the waterfront, having been the former Chief Executive Officer of Sutton Harbour Holdings plc and involved in significant regeneration in the area. I am also a Board member of the proposed Plymouth History Centre, Trustee of the Barbican Trust and South West Image Bank.
Professor Tim Jickells
I have a long association with PML scientists as part of my research activities at the University of East Anglia, from having been a Natural Environment Research Council Theme Leader for Earth System Science and from being a member of PML’s Science Advisory Council. I became a Trustee in 2014. I am also a member of the Defra Science Advisory Council. In 2016 I was made a fellow of the American Geophysical Union
Professor Ralph Rayner
I have been a Trustee since 2009, chair the Science Advisory Council and am a Non-Executive Director of PML Applications Ltd. My background is in oceanography and ocean technology and I currently hold Board positions with Sonardyne International and BMT ARGOSS, amongst others. I am an advisor on the Center for Ocean Solutions Advisory Council in the USA, a Vice President of the Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (IMarEST) and member of various councils and global committees relating to ocean observation.
Simon Sherrard DL
I have been a Trustee since 2012 and also am currently a member of the Audit & Finance Committee. I have a strong connection with maritime industry and institutions, having been the Chairman of the Bibby Line Group Limited and of the Port of London Authority. I am currently a Council member of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and Trustee of several charities in the maritime sector, including the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. I am also the current Deputy Lieutenant of Cornwall.
As former Director of People, Skills & Communication at the Natural Environment Research Council, I was very familiar with PML before I became a Trustee in 2012. I am currently Chair of the Remuneration Committee. I am also currently Chief HR Officer at Alliance Pharmaceuticals Ltd and have considerable experience at Board level in both the private and public sectors in taking organizations through change.
Professor Bess Ward
I have been a Trustee of PML since 2010 and also a member of the Science Advisory Council. Being the Chair of the Department of Geosciences, Princeton University, USA, the research undertaken by PML scientists, particularly in biogeochemistry, is very well known to me.
