The Plymouth Quest at sea

We maintain and operate two vessels that support multiple research projects and long-term monitoring activities, such as the Western Channel Observatory.

The Plymouth Quest is owned and operated by us out of Sutton Harbour, Plymouth, and is used on a daily basis.
 

Specification

Length/Draught 21.5 metres and 3.02 metres
Specification MCA category 2 workboat, operating coastally and offshore
Seagoing capability 5 days/60 miles from a safe haven
Carrying capacity 12 passengers plus 4 crew (day); 6 berths (overnight)
Equipment Trawl and sweepline winches, an A-frame, a net drum, a 10 ton hydraulic crane and a hydraulic stern gate; facilities for collecting a wide range of biological, chemical and physical measurements and samples , and an underway suite of sensors.


PML Explorer

The Plymouth Explorer rib at sea

The PML Explorer, owned and operated by us, provides a perfect working platform, as well as "rapid response" capability to enhance our research in estuarine and coastal waters.

Length 6.8 metres
Specification: MCA certified workboat code 3R vessel; Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB)
Seagoing capability: Up to 20 miles offshore
Carrying capacity: 6 personnel
Equipment: Twin 90hp Suzuki engines, twin fuel tanks carrying a combined 180L of fuel, which can keep the vessel at sea for 8 hours (speed dependant). 12v power supply for scientific equipment and ruggedized laptop is available. Navigation system with echo sounder. Capability to deploy CTD's and messenger triggered water bottles in a variety of volumes.
