Marine Ecosystems Dynamics and Indicators for North Africa (MEDINA)

The goal of the Marine Ecosystems Dynamics and Indicators for North Africa (MEDINA) project is to improve Mediterranean environmental policies by enhancing the capacities of Northern African countries to monitor their coastal ecosystems.

Enhancing the monitoring capacity of a country’s coastal and marine areas ecosystems will consequently increase their abilities to implement environmental policies, conventions and protocols. It will also help to identify major risks due to influences such as urbanisation, increasing nutrient levels and climate change.

As a partner in MEDINA we have contributed to long-term forecasts and satellite based studies relating to the timing of plankton blooms and the success of fisheries along the North African coast. We have also helped to develop many new indicators to enable European ecosystem assessment techniques to be applied to the North African coast without requiring costly programmes of in-situ monitoring.
