MRP Research Dialogue #3 - Marine monitoring: Long-term and sustained ocean observation

Wednesday 24 May 2023 - Wednesday 24 May 2023

: Marine Biological Association
This event has now ended and is archived

Plymouth has a long history of sustained observation of marine ecosystems, including leading several major long-term exemplar programmes and projects (e.g., Western Channel Observatory, Continuous Plankton Recorder and Atlantic Meridional Transect). These research programmes and projects span broad spatial scales covering whole ocean basins and with multi-decadal coverage of a range of observations that comprise ‘established’ approaches (e.g., microscope observation of plankton) and the application of ‘contemporary’ tools (e.g., biomolecular observation such as with eDNA).

This research dialogue is open to all researchers in Plymouth that are engaged in long-term and sustained marine observation as well as ‘users’ of long-term datasets. We also encourage researchers to attend who would like to know more about marine observation and how it could be used to support their research. It is our hope that this dialogue both raises awareness of the impressive range of long-term and sustained marine observation being undertaken by Plymouth marine scientists and finds new synergies between researchers.

Where: Marine Biological Association.
When:  Wednesday 24th May from 1 to 5pm

These talks will precede an opportunity for extended informal discussions over drinks and nibbles.

The purpose of the Plymouth Research Dialogues is to build a culture of communication and collaboration across our marine research community, creating a more exciting and effective academic environment within which we can conduct our research. Ultimately leading to tangible benefits of new collaborative projects, studentships, and publications.

We invite researchers to submit proposals for presentations in the form of a title and a short abstract (less than 300 words). We seek presentations that contain each of the following elements:

  1. a description of current activity and how it relates to the topic,
  2. a vision of where this topic should look to develop in the future, and
  3. what collaborations and partnerships you would like to develop to help you deliver this vision.

Please refer to these three elements in your abstract.

Submit your abstract to K.Pritchard@plymouth.ac.uk by 12 noon on Friday 28th April. To facilitate catering, can all speakers and attendees please register via the QR Code by Friday 28th April 2023.
