Marine Research Plymouth: Research Dialogue #4 -"Climate change mitigation and adaptation"

Wednesday 1 November 2023 - Wednesday 1 November 2023

: Plymouth University, Sherwell Upper Lecture (SHC 2) and open foyer
This event has now ended and is archived

Plymouth has a long history of outstanding research on the influence of climate on species distributions – including groundbreaking work on distributions of intertidal molluscs and crustaceans, as well as plankton and commercially important fish. Increasingly, our portfolio of research is focusing on some of the solutions to diminishing populations as a result of climate change, including renewable energy, clean maritime, nature-based solutions, carbon dioxide removal and adaptation strategies associated with the increased risks from storms and coastal flooding.

The Marine Research Plymouth (MRP) Research Dialogues aim to help build a culture of communication and collaboration among the partnership and hence across the Plymouth marine research community. This instance is particularly of interest to researchers that are engaged in marine research around climate change mitigation and adaptation, but we also encourage researchers to attend who would like to know more about this topic and explore how it might interface with their own research.

It is our hope that this dialogue will raise awareness among Plymouth marine scientists of their respective work and facilitate new synergies and future collaborations between them, and that the dialogue series overall will create a more exciting and effective local academic environment within which we can conduct our research, leading to tangible benefits such as new collaborative projects, studentships, and publications.

The MRP Research Dialogue is an informal and in-person event open to all marine staff and PhD students at UoP, MBA and PML. It will include 12–15 presentations (10 minutes each) showcasing the work of various groups, or individuals, that are relevant to this topic. The talks will be followed by an opportunity for extended informal discussions over wine and nibbles.

Where: Sherwell Upper Lecture (SHC 2) and open foyer

When: 1st November 2023 from 1 to 5pm

We invite researchers to submit proposals for presentations in the form of a title and a short abstract (up to 300 words). We seek presentations that contain each of the following elements: i) a description of current activity and how it relates to the topic, ii) a vision of where this topic should look to develop in the future, and iii) what collaborations and partnerships you would like to develop to help you deliver this vision.

Please refer to these three elements in your short abstract. Submit your abstract to kpritchard@plymouth.ac.uk by 2nd October 2023.

To facilitate catering, please can all attendees (speakers and attendees) register by completing the form linked below by 27th October 2023.
