Dr Martinez-Vicente is a bio-optical oceanographer who specialises in collecting high quality measurements of in-situ optical properties and their interpretation. This work is applied to improve other areas of work at PML, such as remote sensing and coupled physical-biogeochemical modelling. He has a multidisciplinary and international background education with a BSc in Marine Sciences (Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain), a MSc in Coupled Marine Ecosystem Modelling (Université de Liège, Belgium) and a PhD in Marine Optics (part-time with Bangor University, Wales, UK).

Victor joined PML in 2002, working on the validation of MERIS ocean colour sensors in coastal waters where he participated in several cruises on the European Shelf. He has also been involved in regular sampling of optical properties in the Western Channel Observatory and on cruises in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. He has investigated the relationships between backscattering and abundances of different types of phytoplankton through the analysis of data from AMT cruises. Recent work is focused on coastal and lacustrine (lake) water, sampling above water reflectance data for satellite validation.
