PML’s Dr. Dhritiraj Sengupta recognised with Google’s Geo for Good Impact award

To be eligible for these awards, users or organisations must produce tangible impacts - focusing on either carbon mitigation, climate adaptation or nature conservation – using at least one Google mapping tool (Google Earth, Google Earth Engine, My Maps, or Maps Platform API).
PML’s Physical Geographer and Earth Observation Scientist Dr Dhritiraj Sengupta has been using the Google Earth Engine tool to quantify the growth of large-scale coastal land reclamation, i.e. the area of new, artificially created land, such as the Palm de Jumeira. His work estimated a global loss of over 1,000 km^2 of marine habitat since 1990s which has resulted in a better understanding of both the challenges and opportunities of these new coastlines.
He commented on the news of the award from Google:
"I am utterly excited to receive the Geo for Good Impact award from Google. By using Google Earth Engine, I was able to process terabytes of satellite images to analyze 21st-century large-scale coastal reclamation at a global scale. This research has supported the Contribution of Working Group II to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 2022. Going ahead, at PML I plan to continue this multi-disciplinary research on understanding the impact of such coastal expansion and provide key insights to policymakers and stakeholders from local to global scale. I would like to thank Institutions such as East China Normal University, University of Cape Town and University of Southampton for supporting this research since 2016."
