Our mission is two-fold. Firstly, to undertake scientifically excellent research that generates greater understanding of the marine and aquatic environment, the threats it faces, its linkages and interactions with freshwater, terrestrial and atmospheric systems, and its relationship with human society. Secondly, to use this greater understanding to effect demonstrable change in the way in which the marine environment is appreciated, managed, protected and valued. We consider each of these two activities to be equally important with the objectives and organisational structures described below reflecting our social responsibility towards supporting a healthy, clean, biologically diverse and sustainably managed ocean.
Advances in marine technology can deliver economic benefits and improve the management, sustainability and governance of marine and coastal environments. Our scientists, modellers and technologists operate at the forefront of marine technology development.
Our vision is for the restoration of diverse and productive ecosystems that are maintained and managed sustainably.
The marine environment is impacted by human activities which have variable effects on the health of the ocean and its capacity to provide for us. Whilst some impacts are very visible, others are less obvious, and whilst some are benign, others are very harmful.
The marine environment is fundamental to regulating Earth’s climate and has greatly slowed the rate of climate change, however this has come at a cost and the ocean has warmed, acidified and lost oxygen, whilst circulation patterns are changing, and sea levels are rising. To manage these challenges it is vital to understand the interplay between the climate, the ocean and its ecosystems and resources to support sustainable ocean management.
PML is dedicated to promoting an understanding of the ocean’s influence on our lives and the impact we have on our ocean. We aim to inspire interest, foster emotional connections and empower individuals to make informed decisions and changes in behaviour that contribute to the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of the ocean.
Fisheries and aquaculture are important contributors to global food security. Critical issues affecting fisheries are overseen by international strategies: in particular, SDG 14 Life Below Water provides targets on sustainable fishing, supporting small-scale fisheries and countering illegal fishing. PML seeks to achieve societal impact through contributions to these international efforts.
