PML announces new Head of Science for Sea & Society

PML is excited to announce the new Head of Science for Sea & Society, Professor Nicola Beaumont.

Prof Beaumont has been working at the interface between natural sciences and socio-economics for over two decades, specialising in quantifying and valuing marine and coastal ecosystem services.

With experience from local councils to global stakeholders, spanning a variety of marine management issues including renewable energy, ocean acidification and marine planning and policy, Prof Beaumont brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to her new role.

As a new Head of Science, Prof Beaumont is building on more than 20 years of research at PML, during which time she has published extensively, in peer reviewed literature, policy reports and book chapters, including co-authorship on the most highly cited marine ecosystem series paper. She was lead economist for marine and coastal margins for the UK National Ecosystem Assessment & her work has also gone beyond traditional scientific arenas, encompassing popular science articles and guidance for interdisciplinary working.

Prof Beaumont has also recently taken up professorships at two universities with which she is associated; the University of Exeter and the University of East Anglia.

Prof Beaumont said: “I’m looking forward to continuing and developing my work at PML in this new role, exploring the important relationships between people and the marine environment.

“We have a great team in our Sea & Society group, with a wide range of expertise across and within disciplines. I’m excited to lead and support the group in producing research which is both excellent and impactful, with a core aim of supporting sustainable and responsible ocean stewardship, for the conservation of the environment and to ultimately improve lives.”
