The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Open Science Conference (OSC), Kigali, Rwanda, from 23-27 October 2023
The WRCP Open Science Conference will, for the first time, take place in Africa to further develop mutual understanding and explore opportunities and challenges of the continent. This once-in-a-decade conference will bring together the climate, environment, and related communities to discuss the latest developments in climate science and explore the transformative actions urgently needed to ensure a sustainable future. Taking place at a critical moment in Earth’s history, the outcome of all conference sessions will culminate with the “Kigali Declaration” – a conference statement that will be submitted to the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) taking place in the United Arab Emirates immediately after the Conference.
Plymouth Marine Laboratory’s Gayathra Bandara, a Trevor Platt Fellow, will give a presentation on the ‘ Impact of climate change on behaviour of marine mammals’ as well as talking about how youth can engage in conservation amongst other topics.

The WCRP coordinates research around some of the most pressing scientific questions in relation to the compounded nature of the climate system, to find answers together with all nations, looking at it from multitude of disciplines. Through international science coordination and partnerships, WCRP contributes to advancing our understanding of the multi-scale dynamic interactions between natural and social systems that affect climate. To inform the development of policies, services and to promote science education. Most critically, WCRP-supported research builds the climate science that underpins the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, including national commitments under the Paris Agreement of 2015, and contributes to the knowledge that supports the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and multilateral environmental conventions.
