The Science Committee are the main source of scientific advice to NERC, taking responsibility for a wide range of tasks including developing their science strategy and helping to prioritise funding new programmes and initiatives.

Prof Beaumont, who was announced as PML's Head of Science for Sea & Society in July 2020, will now be bringing her wide-ranging expertise, including in the assessment and valuation of biodiversity and ecosystem services, to the committee.

She said: "I am delighted to become a member of the NERC Science Committee. This is an exciting opportunity for me to  utilise my experience to support the development of UK environmental science.

"I hope to be able to bring my voice to the science committee to advise and influence positive change across NERCs current and future research, innovation, training, and national capability portfolio. It is a real privilege to work collaboratively with this committee and I can’t wait to get started."
