PML scientists once again recognised on the Highly Cited Researchers list
15 November 2023
We are thrilled to share the news that PML’s Prof. Pennie Lindeque and Dr Matthew Cole have yet again both been named on Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers List 2023. This is Pennie’s 5th year of recognition in the “Environment &Ecology’ category and Matthew’s 4th, acknowledging their continued world-class microplastic research.
The prominent list celebrates scientists around the world that have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field(s) of research. This small fraction of the research population contributes disproportionately to extending the frontiers of knowledge that make the world healthier, more sustainable and more secure.
Only content that passes Clarivate’s rigorous in-house editorial selection is indexed in the Web of Science, containing a remarkable amount of data on scientific content, impact and collaborations from 1900 to the present day, on a global scale. The highly cited articles represent “scientific hubs’ that play a pivotal role in joining the dots between many different publications around a topic.
Each researcher selected has authored multiple Highly Cited Papers™ that rank in the top 1% by citations for their field(s) and publication year in the Web of Science over the past decade. Of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, Highly Cited Researchers are 1 in 1,000.
In this years’ list, only 7,127 researchers from 68 countries have been awarded, totaling 6,849 unique individuals named from 1,362 institutions. For the UK, the number of Highly Cited Researchers on the list was 574 and ranked 3rd on the country list behind the US and mainland China.
Professor Pennie Lindeque, Head of Science for PML’s Marine Ecology and Biodiversity group, and only recently back from Japan having been awarded the prestigious Blue Planet Prize, said:
“It’s absolutely brilliant to be listed as a Highly Cited Researcher for the 5th year running alongside my colleague Dr Matthew Cole. This achievement wouldn’t be possible without all the students and colleagues that we work with. I feel super privileged to work with such fantastic people, and on a subject that I feel so passionate about. Our work is at the forefront of pioneering research into the causes, effects and solutions of microplastics and anthropogenic particles, ranging from selection for antimicrobial resistance in the plastisphere to nature-based solutions to plastic pollution”.
Dr Matt Cole, Senior Marine Ecologist and Ecotoxicologist at PML, commented:
“It is fantastic to be listed as a Highly Cited Researcher in recognition of the impact of our world-leading research on microplastics. In the past year we have published research elucidating the toxicity of microplastics on juvenile mussels, the prevalence of microplastics in the Arctic Ocean and exploring whether nature-based solutions could play a role in stemming the flow of microplastics from source to sea. Next year, we look forward to publishing pioneering research in which we reveal the toxicity of an array of anthropogenic particles, including biodegradable microplastics, cigarette butt fibres and tyre particles on marine life”.
David Pendlebury, Head of Research Analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate said:
“The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers whose significant and broad influence in their fields translates to impact in their research community and innovations that make the world healthier, more sustainable and more secure. Their contributions resonate far beyond their individual achievements, strengthening the foundation of excellence and innovation in research”.
