Strengthening research cooperation with China to help advance global marine science

11 November 2024

We are pleased to announce that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Plymouth Marine Laboratory and State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science in China.

The MoU aims to promote research cooperation with a view to contributing to the advancement of global scientific marine research, focusing on areas of mutual interest including:

  • Marine biogeochemistry and ocean carbon cycle.
  • Marine ecology and biodiversity under global change impacts, such as coastal ecosystem dynamics, marine system modeling.
  • Remote sensing, in particular ocean color remote sensing.

Collaborations will likely take the form of joint research projects, meetings and publications as well as personnel, knowledge and data sharing.

As part of the signing ceremony, PML’s Chief Executive, Prof. Icarus Allen, and the Director of State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science and the Vice President of the University of Xiamen, Prof. Dalin Shi, will each give introductions to their respective institutes followed by a discussion session on future collaborative opportunities.

Prof. Icarus Allen, Chief Executive of Plymouth Marine Laboratory and signatory on the MoU, commented:

“This Memorandum of Understanding with the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science is a significant milestone in our mission to advance global marine science research. It highlights the urgent need for international collaboration in addressing the complex challenges facing our oceans. By joining forces, we can accelerate breakthroughs in understanding and safeguarding the health of our planet’s vital marine ecosystems, key to the wellbeing of communities around the world. Together, we are charting a course toward a more sustainable and resilient future for our global ocean.”

Established in 2005 as part of one of China’s largest marine research organisations, Xiamen University, State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science focuses on marine biogeochemistry and its ecosystem dynamics. It emphasises theoretical and applied research, utilising interdisciplinary approaches and technological innovation.

Earlier in the year the Head of PML’s International Office, Prof. Matt Frost, was invited to sit as one of five new members on Xiamen University’s International Advisory Group. The 5 year appointment will see Prof. Frost and the other members advise on the strategic direction and scientific priorities of the University’s marine research, from an international perspective.
