Andrew is a Social Scientist with the Sea and Society Group at PML. An experienced interdisciplinary multi-method researcher, he is involved in a range of projects that examine relationships between coastal communities and their marine and coastal environments, including international research projects in SE Asia and South America. These relationships are explored through various approaches, including public perception research (sustainable tidal energy, artificial light at night(ALAN)), stakeholder engagement (mangrove management), policy analysis (coastal management) and evaluation and review (nature-connectedness and health & wellbeing). Current projects include National Capability International Research on blue carbon finance in Malaysia and ALAN in Chile; mangrove management in NexAMS (Nexus Action for Mangroves in Selangor, Malaysia; ACCORD (Addressing Challenges of Coastal Communities through Ocean Research for Developing Economies), focusing on collaborative socio-economic work in Vietnam and Malaysia; and SWEEP (The South West Partnership for Environmental and Economic Prosperity) on the “Investment in Nature for Health’ project. Andrew also contributed to the GCRF Blue Communities project looking at spatial and functional links between habitats, ecosystem services and pressures in SE Asia case study sites, and worked on ADVENT, a UKERC funded project in which he explored citizen perceptions of tidal energy and local coastal environmental attributes.
Prior to joining PML, Andrew spent 10 years conducting education research at University of Plymouth, which included multi-national ERASMUS+ projects producing teaching and learning materials, supporting outdoor learning, and exploring facets of research-informed teaching. Andrew has a BSc Geology/Astronomy and an MSc Biological Diversity. He is also an Associate Lecturer at University of Plymouth and teaches NVivo Qualitative Data Analysis Software skills to postgraduate students and research staff across SW UK universities.
