"Having spent most of my career in the fishing industry, starting at PML & PML Applications has shown me how science can play a vital role in understanding and protecting the marine environment. I enjoy working where practical experience and science align, and I remain passionate about the fishing industry and helping ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. "
Joel Dunn is a maritime professional with a strong background in commercial fishing, vessel operations, and offshore marine work. He joined Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML and PML Applications) with extensive practical experience gained through fishing vessel operations, vessel ownership, and hands-on work across a range of marine environments.
In his role at PML, Joel supports marine science and offshore operations as a relief Skipper, contributing to the safe and effective delivery of scientific surveys and fieldwork at sea.
Alongside his professional role, Joel sits on the boards of the Cornwall Fish Producers Organisation (CFPO) and the Plymouth Fisheries & Seafood Association (PFSA). These positions keep him closely connected to the commercial fishing industry and provide insight into the challenges and priorities facing fishermen, processors, and coastal communities.
With a career rooted in fishing and vessel operations, and now working within a scientific organisation, Joel is continuing to develop his role in helping improve communication and understanding between fishermen, marine scientists, and wider marine industries. He is particularly interested in how practical knowledge and scientific evidence can be better aligned to support sustainable marine management and offshore development.
Joel holds a Fishing Class 2 Certificate and a Master 200 GT / OOW 500 GT qualification, and he values collaborative working environments where experience from different sectors can contribute to better outcomes for the marine environment and those who depend on it.
