The 9th  international conference on Artificial Light At Night (ALAN), October 28-31, 2025, Westport, Ireland

PML’s Dr Olivia Rendón and Dr Océane Marcone will be presenting their work on the FOCUS (Future States of the global Coastal ocean: Understanding for Solutions) project on artificial light at night (ALAN), in this largest international scientific conference on the impacts of artificial light at night, where delegates will be covering the topics of biology & ecology, governance & regulation, health, measurement & modeling, social sciences and humanities, and technology & design. The conference is dedicated to bring together researchers and professionals working in the area of ALAN/light pollution to work towards better lighting concepts.

PML’s Director of Science, Professor Tim Smyth will also be attending, presenting on Seeking Tranquility: Assessing Ecological Risk from Artificial Light and Noise Pollution. In recent years, ALAN in marine environments has been a key area of research for Professor Smyth. His work has included mapping the global extent of underwater light pollution and investigating the impact of ALAN around global megacities compared with natural lunar cycles. His work has significantly advanced understanding of light dynamics in marine ecosystems.

Dr Rendón, Dr Marcone and Professor Smyth currently work together as part of the AquaPLAN project: ‘Aquatic Pollution from Light and Anthropogenic Noise: Management of Impacts on Biodiversity’, which aims to quantify the combined impacts of Light and Noise Pollution (LNP) on aquatic biodiversity in European waters, and facilitate the implementation of strategies for managing these pollutants through novel interdisciplinary approaches.
