Second UN World Ocean Assessment calls for urgent changes in how we interact with the ocean
23 April 2021
The failure to deal with the pressures placed on the ocean by human activities continues to present the greatest threat to the ocean, according to the second UN World Ocean Assessment which was launched earlier this week (Wednesday 21 April).
More than 300 experts, including PML Fellow Professor Mike Moore (a UK Government-nominated expert on Environment &Human Health and the Convenor for Chapter 8B: Human health as affected by the ocean), provided input to the report which advises that, “to ensure sustainability, we must work together to improve integrated ocean management, including through joint research, capacity development and the sharing of data, information and technology.”
Describing the ocean as “the life support system of our planet,” the UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that greater understanding of the ocean is essential if the world is to recover better from the COVID-19 pandemic and achieve agreed targets on sustainable development and climate action.
