The major ocean research institutions of the world, which includes Plymouth Marine Laboratory, are working together through the Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO) to promote and advance the observation of the global ocean. This to build the capacity, drive technology innovation and engage with key stakeholders towards sustainable management of the ocean informed by sound science, underpinned by a comprehensive global ocean measurement system.
Professor Steve Widdicombe, PML’s Director of Science & Deputy Chief Executive, will join an impressive number of 39 leaders of POGO Member institutes, at the POGO Director’s meeting 7 June 2025, in Nice, France, just ahead of the UN Ocean Conference (9-13 June 2025, Nice, France).
Hailing no less than 25 countries in Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, and Australia, the attendees will discuss the progress made and challenges ahead for global ocean observing. Their discussions will include the following topics:
A. Towards net zero ocean observing – (how) can we achieve this?
B. New collaborations for low-cost technology development
C. POGO’s role in influencing policy, from national to global scale
D. POGO’s role in fostering, promoting and adopting emerging technologies
E. Infrastructure challenges in the Global South – how do we support ocean observing beyond the training?
F. Addressing the funding challenges facing the global ocean observing system: new funding models, sources and/or international partnerships?
Those at the meeting will also agree a short statement on behalf of the POGO Members to feed in to the UN Ocean Conference as well as the Blue Economy and Finance Forum.
POGO was set up in 1999 and has its Secretariat at Plymouth Marine Laboratory, to find out more please visit: Home | Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean
