The Third BBNJ Symposium will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 10–12 March 2026, bringing together scientists, policymakers, practitioners, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs), civil society and other stakeholders to explore the role of science and knowledge in implementing and governing the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement.

Plymouth Marine Laboratory’s Prof. Ana Queirós and Prof. Matt Frost will participate in the symposium, leading a side event titled ‘A climate-smart pathway for BBNJ’ and contributing their expertise to the Symposium discussions on science-led implementation.

With the BBNJ Agreement entering into force just two months prior to this event, the 2026 symposium will focus on “The Role of Science and Knowledge in BBNJ Implementation.” The meeting builds on discussions initiated at the first symposium in 2023 (Edinburgh, UK) and continued in 2025 (Singapore).

As momentum grows towards effective implementation of the Agreement, this international symposium series plays a key role in fostering dialogue, sharing knowledge, and strengthening readiness among states and stakeholders.
