PML supports launch of ocean literacy materials for schools across Europe
The ProBleu Resource Catalogue of teaching aids is a dynamic online resource designed to promote water literacy and ocean education.
ProBleu, an initiative funded by the European Commission and UKRI, has launched its new ProBleu resource catalogue of water literacy teaching aids, designed to promote water literacy and ocean education in primary and secondary schools across Europe and associated countries.
The new catalogue – which has been developed by Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) – supports educators in bringing marine and freshwater topics into classrooms, inspiring students to become active stewards of our oceans and freshwater ecosystems.
It offers diverse educational resources for engaging theoretical and practical teaching and project-based learning strategies and includes materials on such topics as ocean chemistry, freshwater resources, and citizen science tools, among many others.
Moreover, educators are encouraged to reuse and improve these materials and share their own content in the catalogue, fostering collaboration among educators worldwide.

Dr Ben O’Driscoll, Research Software Engineer at Plymouth Marine Laboratory and lead developer of the catalogue, reflected on its unique capabilities:
“We have co-designed the platform by working alongside educators across the EU to create something that is easy-to-use, customisable and most importantly useful! It has been really exciting working on a project with such an international reach, I hope the platform can now help educators to disseminate knowledge on key water literacy topics inspiring the next generation of scientists and advocates in these subject areas.”
The catalogue supports ProBleu’s wider aim for schools to join the European Blue Schools Network, a community of educators and students dedicated to sustainable practices and marine and freshwater protection.
The ProBleu initiative aligns closely with the EU Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030, engaging school communities in impactful educational activities that nurture a culture of responsibility for protecting our ocean and freshwater resources.
