The resumed session of the fifth United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) – the world’s highest-level decision-making body on the environment – is taking place from 28 February to 2 March in Nairobi. Involving 193 member states, it is expected to reach agreement on commencing negotiations on a legally-binding international agreement on plastic pollution. Researchers from the South West of England – which is recognized globally for its ground-breaking research on marine plastics – are actively supporting a coordinated, comprehensive and robust intergovernmental approach. Scientists from the region continue to provide key evidence used by international policy-makers on the subject of marine plastics, acting in an advisory capacity and having direct input into major UN reports and publications.
