Yanna is a geographer and interdisciplinary remote sensing and earth observation scientist. Her research interests lie at the interface where the physical world interacts with people, with a particular focus on coastal environments. She uses EO and remote sensing methods to investigate global change processes, including phytoplankton and macroalgal dynamics, coastal carbon cycling, and the impacts of extreme events such as wildfires on coasts, with the aim of supporting the management of emerging environmental risks.
She joined PML as part of the Marine Observations and Processes team in 2024 and is currently involved in several coastal research projects, applying EO and remote sensing methods to improve understanding of environmental change in coastal systems.
Previously, Yanna completed her PhD at the University of Southampton where she used an interdisciplinary approach combining remote sensing with oceanography and ecology to improve detection and monitoring of sargassum macroalgae blooms and beach landings in the Tropical Atlantic region.
