Saskia’s interests include a mix of marine ecology, biochemistry, oceanography and geophysics. Her aim is to gain a better understanding of vertical fluxes in marine environments in general, and the biological carbon pump in particular.
She carried out her doctoral studies between 2016 and 2020 at PML, while enrolled in the SPITFIRE DTP at Southampton University. The PhD project was focussed on exchanges of dissolved and particulate matter between the seafloor and the water column on different time scales. Following this she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Helmholtz Zentrum Hereon in Geesthacht, Germany, using plankton and particle imagers to study the role of both in the biological carbon cycle.
Throughout this postdoctoral work, Saskia became interested in, and acquainted with, digital methods such as machine-learning approaches to image data classification, and automated sensors. In her job as a Digital Marine Biologist at PML, Saskia aims to tackle the challenges of marine science through the use of state-of-the-art sensing and data processing methodologies and technologies.
