The British Ecological Society (BES) Conservation Ecology Group is holding a free online panel discussion titled: ‘Interdisciplinarity in action’. Mon, 31 Mar 2025 12:00 – 13:30 BST

PML’s Dr Stefanie Broszeit is an invited speaker. Dr Broszeit is a senior ecosystem services scientist here at the laboratory, who over the last decade has focused on the benefits that the sea provides to humans and how we capture this knowledge. This can help to make better (read more sustainable) management decisions. A key benefit of this approach is that many different voices can be heard in this way, for example, we can involve local communities in decision making or look at how to fund nature restoration through green investment instruments. This requires a wide breadth of expertise, which means that Stefanie never works with marine ecologists alone but instead bridge gaps between different disciplines.

Event description:

Finding solutions to the wicked challenges we face today in nature conservation requires interdisciplinary collaboration. Through gathering together multiple disciplinary perspectives, we can research the different and interconnected drivers of ecological change and arrive at more holistic solutions. At least in theory! Building and maintaining effective interdisciplinary collaborations can be extremely challenging in practice. This online discussion will provide a valuable opportunity for researchers and practitioners, in a variety of roles and career stages, to reflect on the challenges, and solutions for working effectively in interdisciplinary teams in applied ecology and conservation. The panel will comprise six researchers/practitioners, based in UK universities and organisations, but working across the world in interdisciplinary teams: Dr Vivienne Groner (Imperial College), Dr Heri Andrianandrasana (University of Warwick), Dr Tania Mendo (University of St Andrews), Dr Stefanie Broszeit (Plymouth Marine Laboratory), Rosalie Wright (Solent Seascape Project), and Dr Andy Suggitt (University of Northumbria).
