New UK Fish, Fisheries and Aquaculture policy briefs published
17 December 2024
In 2012, The UK Marine Climate Change and Impacts Partnership (MCCIP) published a series of scientific reviews looking at the implications of climate change for fish, fisheries and aquaculture in UK seas. MCCIP has now published a series of policy briefs updating this information and reflecting our greater understanding of the climate change impacts on these sectors as well as the role the industries can play in achieving net zero, and also changes in the wider policy context.
PML’s Prof. Matt Frost, alongside Paul Buckley (Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science – Cefas) and with support from experts from government, academia and industry led on the development of these policy briefs that focused on net zero fisheries and aquaculture, adapting fishing fleets, and aquaculture production.
The policy briefs are framed around the climate change mitigation and adaptation objectives in the UK Fisheries Act 2020, and the policies to achieve them in the 2023 Joint Fisheries Statement (JFS). Following the synthesis of the latest evidence and advice, the briefs are UK focused with reference to the wider global context where relevant.
