#OceanforClimate

The 27th session of the United National Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) will be hosted by the Arab Republic of Egypt from 6-18 November, 2022 at the Sharm el-Sheikh International Convention Centre.

Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) ocean and climate experts will participate in and organize numerous ocean events at COP27, as they have done since 2009, continuing to highlight the enormous role the ocean plays in sustaining life on Earth, regulating climate and the consequences of a high CO2 world for the ocean and society. This includes being a founding partner of the 1st Ocean Pavilion at a COP as well as a founding partner in the COP27 Virtual Ocean Pavilion which was launched in 2021 for COP26.

The ocean has greatly slowed the rate of climate change, however, this has come at a cost as the ocean has warmed, acidified and lost oxygen, whilst circulation patterns are changing, and sea levels are rising. As humans strive to manage these multiple threats it is vital to understand the interplay between the climate, the ocean and its ecosystems and resources to support sustainable ocean management.

Our experts are also involved with science-policy papers due to be published at COP27 and further information is to follow. Several of our scientists are also lead authors with the assessment reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN body assessing the science related to climate change. The IPCC reports are key to international climate change negotiations and provide governments around the world and at all levels with scientific information that they can use to develop climate policies.

You can find and meet with our experts in any of the side events listed below as well as exhibition stand 3 in addition to the Ocean Pavilion, the UNFCCC virtual platform and the Virtual Ocean Pavilion. For any questions on PML at COP27 please contact Thecla Keizer: tke@pml.ac.uk or the PML Communications & Marketing group: comms@pml.ac.uk.
