Marine Processes and Observations

Observing, analysing, and understanding ocean processes, pioneering advanced Earth Observation (EO) techniques and leveraging digital innovations to achieve a greater fundamental understanding of marine systems.

The Marine Processes and Observations group combines world-leading biogeochemical expertise with cutting-edge Earth observation technology to monitor and understand the marine environment on a global scale. Using a multi-platform approach—from satellites and drones to autonomous systems and shipboard surveys—we explore key ocean interfaces and deliver actionable insights that support sustainable development, environmental policy, and climate resilience.

What we do

With capabilities spanning local to basin-wide and pole-to-pole scales, MPO investigates the physical, chemical, and biological processes that shape the ocean and its interactions with the atmosphere and land. We focus on:
  • Biogeochemical cycling of organic and inorganic carbon and nutrients in diverse marine and coastal environments
  • Understanding fluxes between interconnected Earth systems and the drivers that influence them
  • Monitoring and modelling ecosystem function to inform forecasts, management, and adaptation
