New Honorary Appointment with the University of Exeter
PML is delighted to announce that Dr James (“Jim”) Clark, Head of Group for Environmental Intelligence, has been appointed Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Exeter.
The appointment recognises Jim’s contribution to marine and environmental science, as well as his longstanding collaboration with colleagues at the University of Exeter. It further strengthens the partnership between the two organisations, which spans collaborative research, knowledge exchange and support for the next generation of marine scientists.
During 13 years at PML, Jim’s multidisciplinary research has encompassed ecosystem modelling, ocean forecasting and the application of artificial intelligence to environmental science.
He is widely recognised for his research on marine plastic pollution, including the development and application of ocean-modelling techniques for studying the movement and accumulation of plastic in the marine environment.
More recently, his work has focused on using artificial intelligence and machine-learning to understand how human activities are changing the ocean and what those changes mean for marine ecosystems.
This work includes the Automated, in situ Plankton Imaging and Classification System (APICS), which combines advanced imaging technology with artificial intelligence to improve understanding of how environmental change affects plankton, the microscopic organisms that underpin marine food webs. Collaborators at the University of Exeter have contributed to the development of the AI-based image classifiers used by APICS, reflecting the practical value of the longstanding partnership between the two organisations.
Dr James Clark, Head of Group for Environmental Intelligence at PML and now Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Exeter, said:
“I undertook my first postdoc at the University of Exeter before joining PML. I have enjoyed maintaining and growing my connection to the University since that time and am deeply honoured to be appointed Honorary Associate Professor. I look forward to working even more closely with colleagues and students there, to help tackle the environmental challenges facing our oceans and coastal communities.”
Speaking about the value of the awards and ongoing collaborations between organisations, Prof. Tim Smyth, Director of Science at PML, commented:
“Honorary appointments like this play an important role in strengthening the partnerships that drive research and innovation. They recognise the value of long-standing relationships between organisations such as the University of Exeter and PML, creating new opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange and shared impact.”
Prof. Brendan Godley, Professor of Conservation Science at the University of Exeter and nominator of Jim’s appointment, added:
“I am very pleased to see Dr Jim Clark recognised with an honorary position at Exeter. As a valued long-term collaborator, he has made an important contribution to our joint work, and we look forward to continuing and strengthening this relationship in the years ahead.”
