Plymouth to host 8th ‘Advances in Marine Ecosystem Modelling Research (AMEMR)’ conference in 2027

We are delighted to announce that the 8th Advances in Marine Ecosystem Modelling Research (AMEMR) conference, organised by Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), will be held at the University of Plymouth on the 5th-8th July 2027.

AMEMR brings together the international marine ecosystem modelling community to share the latest advances in the field, from new modelling techniques and applications to the challenges of representing complex marine systems under a changing climate.

The 2027 conference continues this tradition, offering researchers, students and practitioners the chance to connect, exchange ideas and showcase cutting-edge work in Plymouth; Britain’s Ocean City that has an excellent and long-recognised reputation as an international hub for marine and ocean science.

The previous AMEMR conference in 2024 attracted 164 participants from across the world, including Europe, US, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Chile, China and Bangladesh. The packed conference agenda involved 5 keynotes talks, 72 oral presentations, 2 discussion panels, 23 flash presentations and 64 posters.

At its core, AMEMR holds a strong belief in the development of early career researchers. Previous conferences have included online mentoring sessions before the conference, a separate early career ice breaker and a mentoring breakfast that were all well attended and received excellent feedback.

One of the many benefits of such conferences are the long-term collaborations that are fostered and nurtured at these events. One such example of an AMEMR collaboration was the hosting of a visiting researcher from the Middle East Technical University for a year at PML to study marine heatwaves. Other examples include co-authoring of papers, joint research projects and transnational mentoring.

Thoughts from past AMEMR participants

“AMEMR is now clearly the premier international conference in the field of marine ecological modelling and this is reflected in the participation of leading scientists from all parts of the world. Because nearly all AMEMR sessions are plenary, delegates participate in a common journey from start to finish, creating a camaraderie that can’t be found at conferences with numerous parallel sessions.”

“AMEMR is unquestionably my favourite of all science meetings, and I have unfailingly attended every AMEMR since my first one in 2008. Over the years, I have served many roles at AMEMR: oral presenter, keynote, panel speaker, session chair, mentor, discussion moderator, and scientific steering committee member. I have thoroughly enjoyed all these different ways of participating and now consider myself an AMEMR grandma and attending AMEMR is like attending my family reunion. It provides a venue where you can connect with familiar and new faces, discover what others are doing and thinking, and share your own exiting developments.”

“My personal favourite thing about AMEMR is connecting with other modellers who can discuss the nuts and bolts of what we do and how we do it; networking opportunities that are incredibly difficult to find elsewhere. My other favourite thing about AMEMR is that is so supportive of Early Career Researchers (ECR). Through mentoring sessions and special ECR events, high visibility of ECR presentations and welcoming more-senior attendees who genuinely want to engage with ECRs, AMEMR is a wonderful event to expand one’s research network and make lifelong friends. I have encouraged all my students and post-docs to attend and every one of them has raved about their AMEMR experience.”

“AMEMR is a unique gathering of creative minds that fosters a sense of community among people who have diverse expertise but shared interests, for example, in using “modelling approaches to better understand and predict marine ecosystems and support marine sustainability.”

“My favourite aspect of AMEMR is the possibility to have plenty of time to discuss your main activities or to discover novel topics in ecosystem modelling. I would recommend to those who wish to see a large variety of applications of ecosystem modelling.”

“AMEMR is a friendly and vibrant conference, with much less pressure compared to bigger conferences.”

The AMEMR conference will run from 5th-8th July 2027.

Further details on themes and keynote speakers can also be found on the AMEMR website.
